Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
How do I start tracking my speed?
Open Speedometer and grant location access when prompted. Tap the 'Start' button and the app will immediately display your current speed using GPS.
What iOS version is required?
Speedometer requires iOS 17.0 or later for optimal GPS performance and feature support.
Do I need an internet connection?
No! Speedometer works entirely offline using your device's GPS. No internet connection is needed to track speed, distance, or routes.
How do I grant location permissions?
When you first open Speedometer, you'll be prompted to allow location access. Choose 'While Using the App' for best results. You can also manage this in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Speedometer.
Speed & Distance Tracking
How accurate is the speedometer?
Speedometer uses your device's GPS for speed measurement. Accuracy depends on GPS signal strength — open areas with clear sky provide the best results. In dense urban areas or tunnels, accuracy may be reduced.
What units are supported?
Speedometer supports mph (miles per hour) and km/h (kilometers per hour). You can switch between units in the app settings.
Can I see my maximum speed?
Yes! Speedometer tracks your maximum speed, average speed, and current speed during each session. These are displayed in real-time on the main screen.
How is distance calculated?
Distance is calculated using GPS coordinates as you move. The app continuously tracks your position and accumulates the total distance traveled during a session.
Route Tracking
Can I see my route on a map?
Yes! Speedometer displays your route in real-time on the built-in map. After completing a session, you can review the full route with speed data along the path.
Can I save my trips?
Trip data is saved locally on your device. You can review past sessions including route, distance, duration, and speed statistics from the trip history.
Does GPS tracking drain my battery?
Speedometer is optimized for battery efficiency. GPS is only active during tracking sessions. Stop tracking when you're done to conserve battery.
Data & Privacy
Does Speedometer collect any personal data?
No. Speedometer does not collect, transmit, or store any personal data on our servers. We have no user accounts, no analytics SDKs, and no data pipelines. Your location, speed, and trip history never leave your Apple ecosystem.
Does Speedometer show ads?
No. Speedometer contains zero ads — no banners, no interstitials, no sponsored content, no tracking pixels. Ever.
Does Speedometer track me or sell my data?
No. We do not track you, profile you, or sell any information to anyone. There are no third-party trackers or advertising identifiers in the app.
Where is my data stored?
Your data stays on your device and syncs privately across your iPhone, iPad, and Mac via iCloud. Speedometer does not transmit your location, speed, or trip data to any third-party server — iCloud sync uses your personal Apple ID and Apple's own infrastructure.
Does my data sync across my devices?
Yes. Speedometer uses iCloud sync so your trips, routes, fuel logs, maintenance records, and settings stay up to date across all your Apple devices signed in to the same Apple ID. You can disable iCloud sync anytime in the app settings.
Can I export my trip data?
Yes. You can export individual trips or your full history as GPX files or PDF reports directly from the app.
Troubleshooting
Speed shows 0 even while moving
Make sure location permissions are set to 'While Using the App' with 'Precise Location' enabled. Also check that you're in an area with good GPS signal — indoors or surrounded by tall buildings can weaken GPS accuracy.
GPS signal is weak or unavailable
Move to an open area with clear sky for best GPS reception. Avoid tunnels, underground areas, and dense building clusters. It may take a few seconds for GPS to lock on when you first start tracking.
Location permission was denied
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Speedometer and select 'While Using the App'. Make sure Location Services is enabled system-wide.
