Automatic Trip Detection and Auto-Start Trips

Drive. Odo takes care of recording.

Turn on automatic detection and Odo starts a trip once you’re actually moving, pauses at long stops, and ends the trip after you park, trimming the time you sat still.

Why it matters

Manual recording fails at exactly the wrong moments: when you’re in a hurry, distracted, or just forget. Automatic detection makes your driving log complete without you ever thinking about it.

Auto-start, tuned to how you drive.

Odo uses motion and GPS to tell when a drive has really begun. Adjust how fast and for how long you need to move before a trip starts, so a walk across a car park doesn’t count.

  • Start speed from 1 to 60, default 12 km/h
  • Speed must hold for a few seconds before a trip starts, 5 seconds by default
  • Restart cooldown, so stop-and-go doesn’t create extra trips
  • Resumes a paused trip when you drive off again
  • Snooze auto-start for 30 minutes up to the rest of the day

Auto-pause and auto-end.

Long stops don’t have to spoil your averages, and you never have to remember to stop a trip.

  • Auto-pause after 30 seconds to 5 minutes stationary, or a custom time
  • Auto-resume as soon as you move
  • Auto-end after 5 to 60 minutes idle, or a custom time
  • The trip’s end time is set back to when you actually stopped
  • Optional: delete very short trips automatically

Or use your car as the trigger.

Prefer certainty over motion sensing? Shortcuts automations can start and stop trips when CarPlay or your car’s Bluetooth connects. Use both, and whichever fires first wins.

  • CarPlay, Bluetooth, Driving Focus, NFC tag and Action Button triggers
  • Ignore Early Stops protects against a flaky connection ending a trip too soon
  • Optional trip summary notification when a trip ends on its own

How to set it up

  1. 1

    Open Auto-Start Trips

In Odo’s settings, open Auto-Start Trips and choose Motion Detection.

  2. 2

    Allow access

Give Odo Motion & Fitness access and set Location to Always, so it can notice a drive in the background.

  3. 3

    Fine-tune

Adjust the start speed, then turn on auto-pause and auto-end if you want them.

Automatic detection is off until you turn it on. It can’t tell a driver from a passenger, and motion sensing uses some battery.

Questions about Automatic trip detection

How do I record trips automatically without opening the app?

Use iOS Shortcuts automations: trigger Odo's Start, Pause, Resume, or Stop actions from CarPlay, Bluetooth, NFC, Focus Mode, or the Action Button. Full answer

How do I automatically pause or end trips?

Pair every Start automation with a matching Pause/Stop automation on the inverse trigger (CarPlay disconnect, Bluetooth disconnect, Focus off, NFC tag re-tap). Full answer

My automation isn't running automatically — how do I fix it?

Open the automation in the Shortcuts app and turn off "Ask Before Running" so it runs immediately without a confirmation tap. Full answer
